if I put this in my kitchen at home, is it true I will not be able to maintain the warranty on the item?

no it is not true, 1 Year parts/labor coverage on entire machine for residential use.
Residential warranty is significantly shorter, but believe me Manitowoc SM-50 will serve you forever if you change water filters on time. It has Patented cleaning and sanitizing technology
